One of the challenges for new DSLR Filmmakers is shooting in Manual Mode. Unlike with DSLR Photography there are no actual benefits to shooting in Auto Mode.
Getting into Manual Mode with your DSLR Camera is going to allow you to take control of your shots and produce the type of video results you want.
This will mean learning the exposure triangle as it applies to DSLR video, which is a bit different than it is with DSLR photography.
You will still need to learn to control your DSLR camera in terms of aperture, shutter speed and ISO as well as white balance in order to get great shots that translate to great videos.
